URI student travels the world en route to engineering degree

Judging by New Britain, Conn., resident Aaron Hebenstreit’s passport, it appears that he spent much of his college education traveling abroad. And that is exactly why he chose to enroll in the University of Rhode Island’s International Engineering Program (IEP).

Barrington resident Alison O’Malley wasn’t entirely sure what biomedical engineering was before she decided to study it at the University of Rhode Island, but she made a good choice.

Johnston resident Joey Micheli describes himself as “the kid on the block who loved computers and helped all my neighbors with their computer problems.” Those experiences drove him to study computer engineering at the University of Rhode Island, from which he will graduate on May 18.

URI’s Sigma Xi Chapter inducts 21 research scientists, engineers

Twenty-one undergraduate and graduate students along with some of their professors were inducted into the University of Rhode Island’s chapter of Sigma Xi, the oldest and largest society of research scientists and engineers in the world. Induction ceremonies were held during a banquet last month.

URI Foundation announces 2008 Excellence Award winners

Glen R. Kerkian, President of the University of Rhode Island Foundation today announced the winners of the Foundation’s 2008 Excellence Awards. The awards were established in 1974 to recognize members of the staff or faculty of the University who go above and beyond their responsibilities to enhance the objectives of a particular department as well as the University as a whole. Winners, who were chosen for each of the four categories of awards, will be recognized at an official ceremony in the fall and will also receive a framed citation and a $2,000 cash award. Mohammad Faghri, of East Greenwich, professor of engineering, is the winner of the 2008 URI Foundation Scholarly Excellence Award.

URI engineer challenges computer users to 'attack' program designed to combat manipulation of product rating systems

To detect manipulated or unfair ratings, Sun and URI colleagues Qing Yang and Yafei Yang have developed an algorithm that can detect suspicious ratings for vendors like Amazon. A $1,000 prize is offered to the individual or team that can introduce the largest bias in the rating system, testing its effectiveness.

The Tuckers have backed up that advice with a $160,000 donation to URI to enhance the H.
