Virus InformationWe all must be constantly aware of the perpetual threat of hostile viral invasions. Both the PCs and the email at the ECC are scanned regularly for viruses. As for the rest of the computers out there... it's every byte for themselves. The best way to give your computer a fighting chance is to follow these three simple suggestions: 1. Keep your antivirus software updated. By keeping your antivirus software up to date you're ensuring that your computer is protected from the maximum number of viruses known to exist. If you do not currently have antivirus software URI's Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) provides McAfee VirusScan free of charge to its users. To obtain a copy go to the URI Virus Support Website and follow the instructions for installing VirusScan (Windows or Macintosh). If you already have VirusScan installed, run the update regularly (at least weekly) by right clicking on the V Shield icon in your system tray and then left-click on "Update Now..." (Windows only) |

2. Keep your operating system updated. Keeping your operating system up to date helps to prevent your computer from being attacked by computer worms and other malicious programs. To update your operating system click on the "Start" button and then click on "Windows Update" (Windows only). Follow the instructions for installing any critical updates that are available. 3. Never open unidentifiable email attachments. When it comes to email attachments, the best rule to follow is not to open any email with an attachment unless you are expecting the attachment. Viruses have become a lot sneaker. Attachments containing viruses can be sent in a phony email supposedly from a friend or family member. If you are suspicious of an email delete it immediately!! If you suspect that your computer may be infected, update your virus software, and operating system and run a full system scan of your computer. If the scan does not show any viruses and you are still suspicious, refer to the URI Virus Support Website for additional information. | ||||||||||
