Alumni News

Aaron Clark

I am currently a Field Industrial Engineer for New Penn Motor Express (www.newpenn.com), a Northeast Regional Less than Truckload (LTL) carrier operating 26 terminals in the northeast from Baltimore, MD extending north as far as Burlington, Vermont with 2 other terminals in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and Quebec, Canada. As a regional carrier, New Penn carries next day guaranteed overnight service in the majority of its service lanes throughout its network, and prides itself on delivering among the highest percentage of on time service in the industry, without damages. Because of the high on time service percentage (98.5% or higher) and a low percentage of damages, customers are willing to pay a premium for shipping freight with New Penn.
As an industrial engineer, my job at New Penn is constantly focused on improving the service we provide to customers within our network on an everyday basis. As such, the job entails a high amount of travel, willingness to work a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends, in order to ensure New Penn continues its reputation as the premier carrier here in the Northeast. Although I am currently still learning about basic operational policies and network procedures, my job will entail working on various projects to improve operational efficiency on a network wide basis in order to provide better on time service and reduce damages for our customers. This position also involves a fair amount of numerical calculations and analysis, and operates in a high visibility capacity, requiring constant interaction with other employees on all levels, from union employees to upper level management.
I feel that my education at URI has given me the critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills needed to handle the demands of a position of this capacity, by offering an Industrial Engineering Program in a smaller academic setting with a dedicated faculty and student body, without the large amount of debt incurred through some other universities offering similar degree programs. I am proud to be a URI graduate, and am looking forward to an exciting career that degrees in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering have prepared me for.
