FM Global’s research group, a scientific organization committed to property loss prevention, is pleased to announce the establishment of paid undergraduate and graduate internships in loss prevention engineering and research. Internship assignments are made on the basis of available study and may be for summer or semester periods. Study may be conducted either at the student’s institution or at our engineering and research facility located in Norwood, MA. On occasion, assignments may also be available at our research campus in West Gloucester, RI.
Internship study is done with the involvement of FM Global’s internationally renowned loss prevention research scientists. Research areas include fire hazards and protection (focusing on fire protection systems, fire modeling, flammability, and reactivity), structural hazards and response (focusing on structural response to highly transient loadings and natural haards modeling) and risk, reliability, and failure prevention (focusing on risk and uncertainty analysis, loss statistics and operations research, equipment and system reliability, and corrosion resistance and damageability).
Undergraduate intern candidates are expected to be either juniors or seniors in an engineering discipline Graduate Interns may be enrolled in either a master or doctorate program in an engineering discipline. Primary consideration will be given to mechanical, chemical, electrical, civil or fire protection engineering, as well as operations research, statistics/mathematics, or earth and planetary sciences. Occasionally, other disciplines may be considered.
Interns not registered for advanced degrees will be offered the opportunity to study on a specific, well defined project. Those studying towards a degree may have the opportunity to have their internship study contribute toward their degree requirements, in which case cooperation and collaboration between FM Global and student’s institution is essential.

Our objectives is to increase technical knowledge and to provide loss prevention solutions to FM Global and its customers, This intern would conduct work as part of a research or engineering project under the supervision of the Manage of the Research Laboratories of FM Global’s Research group. This internship offers the student an opportunity to assist with and perform scientific and engineering projects, and to study and improve skills in the areas such as
- Assisting in the design and assembly of various fire and large-scale explosion test apparatuses
- Assisting in the conductance of fire and explosion tests
- Analyzing and reporting the results of fire and explosion tests conducted in the laboratories
- Documenting test facilities (involving the use of AutoCad LT software)
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled in a participating college or university (stipend for the internship will be arranged through the university) and provide a current transcript.
- Be an undergraduate level student in mechanical, chemical, electrical, or fire protection engineering and be in academic good standing for graduation.
- Have a letter of recommendation from their department head or faculty advisor.
The candidate should be skilled with AutoCad LT, MS Word, MS Excel, or equivalent applications and adept with computer usage, particularly in the area of Microsoft Windows XP. Previous exposure to the study areas mentioned above will be a strong plus point. Also, the candidate should have his (her) own means of transportation, since public transportation is not available in this locale.
The student will study principally under Mr. Jeffery Chaffee, Manager of Laboratories of FM Global’s Research group. The study period will be from Mid-May, 2008 until late August, 2008 5 dys/week with the exception of holidays. The expected deliverables will be in the form of new updated drawings, test data and functioning test facilities and apparatuses
