INTERNSHIP POSITION

FM Global Research, the research arm of an insurance company based in Norwood, MA, is seeking a summer intern for 2008 to study in the area of statistical risk management.

Our objective is to increase technical knowledge and to provide loss prevention solutions to FM Global and its customers. This intern typically conducts work as part of a research or engineering project under the supervision of senior staff within the Risk, Reliability & Failure Protection Area of the Research division of FM Global. This internship offers the student an opportunity to assist with and perform scientific and engineering projects, in particular, to understand the frequency and severity of loss.

The intern will conduct efforts in areas such as:

  • Data research and compilation
  • The use of basic data analysis techniques
  • Advanced analysis using probabilistic and statistical methodologies
  • Presentation of work to peers and staff
  • Report-writing

Applicants must:

  • Be either an Undergraduate in Mathematics, Applied Science, Operations Research or Engineering discipline;
  • Be enrolled for 2008-2009 in a participating college or university (stipends for the internship will be arranged through the university) and provide a current transcript;
  • Be a student interested in, and have experience with, probability and statistical methods;
  • Be in academic good-standing for graduation (a GPA of 3 out of 4 possible or better is desired);
  • Have a letter of recommendation from their department head or faculty advisor.

The candidate must be skilled with MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Access and be proficient in computer usage, for example Visual Basic and MATLAB. Exposure to industry will be a plus.

The student will study under Lawrence Krasner, Principal Research Scientist and Dr. Joseph Kahan, Senior Research Specialist within the Risk, Reliability & Failure Protection Area of FM Global Research. The study period would typically encompass 12-14 weeks and begin after Memorial Day 2008.
