Making the
Connection Between Employers and Students
Dr. Bobbi
Koppel
In the world of Internet connections, URI Career Services is cutting edge, by connecting employers and students through the BEACON (Become Employed at Career Online Network)
Recruiting/Mentoring
Program, which electronically manages employer/student connections
as they relate to internships, summer jobs, full-time and part-time
employment. In 2003, 1,757 positions were posted through BEACON
for engineering and technology positions.
An example of how employers and alumni maintain their connections with the College of Engineering as well as the University can be found in the ongoing relationship between URI and General Dynamics/Electric Boat (EB) of Groton, Conn. Alumnus Dan Lowney is an engineering project manager at EB, and has been recruiting engineers on campus since 1976.
“Maintaining a strong relationship with the school is important to us because of the opportunities it presents for us to exchange information and work towards improving the ties between
industry
and academia,” says Dan. “URI has provided EB with
a considerable number of high-quality engineers over the years,
and our strong relationship with Career Services and use of the
BEACON system allow us to connect efficiently with students before
participating in on-campus interviews and job fairs.”
Mark Fredette, celebrating his 20th year at United Technologies, Pratt and Whitney, is another member of BEACON actively looking to aid URI students who are seeking employment. He says he would “welcome contact from URI students and is very willing to help.” Mark’s information can be accessed through the BEACON Career Contact and Alumni Network.”
