Computers
are an integral part of every student's life - no one more so
than an engineering student.
The folks at the Engineering Computer Center at URI know this, and that's why they're ready with all the hardware and software - not to mention Internet access - the students need to succeed.
Professor Emeritus Everett McEwen began the Engineering Computer Center in 1982. Originally located in Bliss Hall, the Center expanded into Crawford Hall in the early 1990s. In 1996, the current Center, dedicated by Teknor Apex, opened in the Chester Kirk building.
The Center boasts 85 workstations, two scanners, five printers, and both cable and wireless Internet access. It provides college wide servers for web pages, email and user files. The Center also holds three classrooms and a conference room. It is for use solely by students in the undergraduate engineering program. Approximately 1,000 engineering students currently hold accounts at the Center.
Steffanie Windus '75 has been the manager of the Center since 1988. Under Steffanie's able leadership, the Center stays current on the hardware and software needs of the undergraduates. Steffanie meets with the Computer Advisory Committee to discuss the programs required for the curricula.
The Engineering Computer Center, located on the second floor of the Kirk Building, is open from 8:00 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily (the Center expands its hours when needed). For more information, visit www.egr.uri.edu/ecc.
